50th Anniversary Linguistics Colloquium | Dawn Bikowski and Keira Park: Teaching Large-Enrollment Online Language Courses, Oct. 8
The Linguistics Colloquium series presents Drs. Dawn Bikowski and Keira Park discussing “Teaching Large-Enrollment Online Language Courses: Faculty Perspectives and an Emerging Curricular Model” on Friday, Oct. 8, from 12:55 to 1:50 p.m. in Gordy 301 or via Microsoft TEAMS.
Bikowski is an associate professor at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, Calif., and former faculty member of the Linguistics Department and alumna of the M.A. in Linguistics program.
Park is an assistant professor of instruction in the Linguistics Department at Ohio University.
Abstract: Do you wonder how to teach a language in a large class, especially one that is held online? This presentation will discuss our research on faculty experiences teaching large online EFL courses of 40 or more students. After a brief overview of the study, we'll outline challenges instructors face and describe the strategies they utilize to engage students in spite of those challenges. This leads us to offer an expanded definition of the ACTFL criteria of meaningful interaction, documenting the role that interaction between student and technology-mediated content has to offer, and focusing on the role of high-quality and engaging instructional videos.
About Linguistics' 50th Anniversary Celebration
"We are really looking forward to everyone joining us this year, either live in person or via Microsoft TEAMS to celebrate our anniversary," said Bell, who also invited alumni and friends to add their names to the donor wall by making a gift, of whatever amount, to the Linguistics Department’s crowdfunding campaign.
He noted that all funds go to support our students’ registration and travel expenses to conferences where they will present their research.
"And please stay in touch! Send us a message on our Linguistics FB page at https://www.facebook.com/LingDeptOHIO," he added.
