50th Anniversary Linguistics Colloquium | Gabriela Castaneda-Gleason and Ana Deumert: The Coloniality of Language, Oct. 23

The Linguistics Colloquium series presents Gabriela Castaneda-Gleason and Ana Deumert discussing “The Coloniality of Language: English in the United States and South Africa, Spanish in Mexico ” on Friday, Oct. 22, from 12:55 to 1:50 p.m. in Gordy 301 or via Microsoft TEAMS.

Contact Dr. David Bell, linguistics chair, belld@ohio.edu, for questions.

Castaneda is assistant professor of instruction of Linguistics at Ohio University, and Deumert is professor head of section at the School of African and Gender Studies, Anthropology and Linguistics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Abstract: In this colloquium the presenters will talk about the coloniality of language, focusing on the history of English and Spanish as colonial languages in South Africa, the United States, and Mexico. The presenters will reflect on the concept of "the coloniality of language," drawing on work in decolonial theory. The talk will be comparative in orientation, comparing three settler colonies.

About Linguistics' 50th Anniversary Celebration

"We are really looking forward to everyone joining us this year, either live in person or via Microsoft TEAMS to celebrate our anniversary," said Bell, who also invited alumni and friends to add their names to the donor wall by making a gift, of whatever amount, to the Linguistics Department’s crowdfunding campaign.

He noted that all funds go to support our students’ registration and travel expenses to conferences where they will present their research.

"And please stay in touch! Send us a message on our Linguistics FB page at https://www.facebook.com/LingDeptOHIO," he added.
