Chemistry Colloquium: Prof. Dmitry Kurouski

The April 16th Chemistry & Biochemistry Colloquium speaker will be Prof. Dmitry Kuroski: Unraveling secrets of bio and forensic worlds using vibrational spectroscopy

Dr. Kuroski is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics at Texas A&M University.

Vibrational spectroscopy, including Infrared and Raman, is capable of probing the structure and composition of analyzed specimens. This information can be used to reveal information about plant and animal health, as well as advance forensic analysis of physical evidence found at crime scenes. In my talk, I will demonstrate how Infrared, Raman, and surface-enhanced Raman sensing can be used to diagnose pathogens, reveal nutritional properties of foods, and detect and identify artificial colorants present on hair and fabric. I will also show how both techniques can be used at the nanoscale to probe the structure of viruses and amyloid aggregates.
