In the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon live the Waorani (WOW-RA-KNEE), a forest-dwelling people who were introduced to vastly contrasting cultural values and customs only 80 years ago when missionaries and oil companies moved into the area in pursuit of their own moral and monetary interests. This encroachment has left the Waorani communities displaced and anguished. Inspired by the Brazilian theater practitioner Augusto Boal and his radical methodology of Theater of the Oppressed (TO), our research team facilitated Forum theater, an empowering method of TO with a group of Waorani community members in Yasuní National Park, Ecuador, to build capacity with the goal to strengthen the community’s skills for achieving social justice by reclaiming their autonomy and identity.
