In this workshop, participants will be introduced to curriculum mapping as a practical tool for visualizing how program learning outcomes are introduced, reinforced, and mastered across courses. Curriculum maps help identify gaps, redundancies, and opportunities for better alignment between course content, assessment methods, and program goals. Additionally, they help analyze whether the curriculum gives students enough opportunity to achieve a program’s learning outcomes. Participants will explore examples and leave with strategies to create or refine maps for their own programs.

Curriculum mapping also supports accreditation and continuous improvement by documenting where and how learning is assessed. When used collaboratively, maps foster meaningful faculty dialogue around curricular design, instructional responsibility, and scaffolding of skills over time.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define the purpose and value of curriculum mapping in the context of assessment and program improvement.
  • Create or revise a curriculum map that aligns courses with program learning outcomes.
  • Identify gaps, overlaps, and misalignments in curriculum design using a curriculum map.
  • Use curriculum maps to inform course-level decisions, student learning opportunities, and document evidence of learning for accreditation or program review.

Facilitators: Joni Wadley, Senior Director, Institutional Effectiveness; and Wendy Adams, CTLA Associate Director for Assessment
