**VIRTUAL EVENT**

With over 30 years of experience in scholarly communication, electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) programs, and digital publishing, John Hagen will lead a timely discussion on the intersection of intellectual property rights, open access, and academic publishing—with a focus on issues that directly impact graduate writers. This talk will explore key questions, including: What rights do doctoral writers retain when submitting work to institutional repositories? What are the pros and cons of open access vs. traditional copyright models? What are the legal and ethical challenges of using AI-generated content in academic writing? How do university submission policies align with national copyright laws? Whether you're preparing to submit a dissertation or navigating publication decisions, this session will help you better understand your rights and responsibilities as an academic author. This lunch lecture series is supported by the Konneker Grant through the Dissertation Writing Support Program, and is a collaborative effort between the Graduate College and University Libraries Research Services.
