This 3-hour, hands-on workshop (register here!) for Ohio University students led by artist, printmaker, and writer Suzanne Coley will include:

  • A close reading of Shakespeare's Sonnet 55 and a discussion of how its themes, imagery, and structure are translated into visual and material form (45-60 minutes).
  • Design and creation of fabric pages for a one-of-a-kind collaborative book inspired by Sonnet 55 (2 hours).
  • A look together at the pages that were created. Discuss which designs feel most successful and why, leading into a broader discussion about interpretation, composition, and what makes a visual response to a literary text compelling (15 minutes).

All supplies will be provided! Feel free to bring fabric or textile scraps or pieces you would like to incorporate into your page.

Suzanne will bind select pages together into a book to be donated to Ohio University Libraries Rare Book Collection!

** Please note that participating students will be expected, ahead of the workshop, to carefully read Sonnet 55 and develop at least 3 key themes or visual responses. I.e. bring to the workshop at least 3 images and a brief written narrative of how the images relate to the Sonnet.

Also join us for: Suzanne Coley's public talk and conversation and pizza lunch for students.
