FROM RURAL OHIO TO LIFE ABROAD: A JOURNEY FROM THE APPALACHIAN RUST BELT TO RESEARCHING BUDDHIST ACTIVISM IN THAILAND
What is it like living and working abroad? What challenges might you face in your educational experience trying to make it all happen? In this talk, Professor Craig M. Pinkerton (Denison), a native of Ohio's Appalachian region and a first-gen Ohio University graduate (BA 2006, English Language and Literaure; MA 2009, Communication Studies; Ph.D 2018, Communication Studies, Rhetoric, and Public Culture), will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the untold story that culminated in his recent book, Buddhist Public Advocacy and Activism in Thailand: A Rhetoric of Dignity and Duty (2024, Palgrave Macmillan). He will describe how his journey to Thailand began and where it has brought him today. Along the way, he will share insights about his experience that may help you reflect on your own educational journey. He will also share insights from his book about the communication practices of Buddhists who do public advocacy and activism in Thailand.
