Linguistics Colloquium | Communicative Context and Relative Clause Production in Young School-Aged Children, Sept. 22
The Linguistics Colloquium series presents Dr. Linye Jing discussing “Communicative Context and Relative Clause Production in Young School-Aged Children” on Sept. 22 from 12:55 - 1:50 p.m. via Microsoft TEAMS.
Jing is a post-doctoral researcher at Columbia University, Communication Sciences and Disorders and an alumna of the M.A. Applied Linguistics program at Ohio University.
Abstract: Relative clause (RC) production is an important milestone in child language development. This study investigated how a felicitous communicative context facilitated RC production among young school age children between five to seven. We primed children’s production of subject and object RCs in a referential communication task that incorporated a felicitous context and a structural priming task that did not. Results showed that priming in the referential communication task led to a higher probability of RC production than in the structural priming task. Children's preference of subject vs. object RCs varied as a function of the tasks. We discuss the clinical implications of these findings as well.
