Abstract: Language learning and teaching remain critically important to humanities and areas studies programs. This fact becomes immediately apparent in the fields of Islamic Studies, Middle East and North Africa Studies, and Classics and Religious Studies. Seeing how language figures into these programs of study reinforces the case for sustaining and expanding language classes, including in the LCTLs. It also demonstrates the necessity of developing collaborations across the linguistics, modern languages, humanities, and social sciences departments.
