Abstract: English L2 skills have shown to have a positive relationship with academic performance in university programs: in English speaking countries (Elder, Bright, & Bennett, 2007; Humphreys et al., 2012); in ELF contexts (Chen, 2011; Meara, et al. 1997; Waring & Nation, 2004; Hsueh-Chao & Nation, 2000). Interest in the post-enrolment language assessment (PELA) originated in Australia, New Zealand and other traditional English-speaking, ‘L2’, contexts. However, there are limited studies on PELA--assessment in ELF EMI contexts to identify potential “at-risks” students. The discussion concludes with the importance of PELA considering the rapidly emerging/ increasing ELF EMI contexts globally; brings into focus the university English placement testing online by seeking answers to the question of a perceived experience of international students who enter undergraduate programs through producing a sufficient IELTS score, in comparison to students who enter international undergraduate studies via an intensive English or EAP pathway program.
