Linguistics Colloquium | Preparing Second Language Educators to Teach Pronunciation with Technology, Sept. 29
The Linguistics Colloquium series presents Dr. Lara Wallace discussing “Preparing Second Language Educators to Teach Pronunciation with Technology” on Sept. 29 from 12:55 - 1:50 p.m. in Gordy 313 and also via Microsoft TEAMS.
Wallace is a former Linguistics Department faculty member and alumna of the M.A. Applied Linguistics program at Ohio University.
Abstract: The rise of pronunciation teaching and research has grown in tandem with the accessibility of technology for language teaching. While pronunciation has traditionally received less focus than other language skills—commonly decried as the Cinderella of its sister skills, it recently has become “The Belle of the Ball” in applied linguistics in terms of the attention it has gotten in research and teaching methods (Derwing 2019, 17–25). Nonetheless, while there is a growing consensus that intelligibility and comprehension can be improved through explicit teaching, there is often a disconnect when it comes to applying research to the classroom; many second language teachers are still finding ways to practically incorporate it into their classrooms. Based on the book chapter of the same name by Lara Wallace and Julia Choi* (2022) in Technological Resources for Second Language Pronunciation Learning and Teaching: Research-based Approaches, this presentation will summarize the choices of teachers in training as they learn to teach pronunciation and utilize technology to do so.
*Julia Choi ’21 is also an alumna of the MA Applied Linguistics program.
