Mathematics Colloquium | Matt Ando on Guises of the second Chern class, Oct. 5
The Mathematics Colloquium series presents Matt Ando discussing "Guises of the second Chern class: A topological field theory in the action for the Wess-Zumino-Witten model and its relationship to elliptic cohomology" on Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. in Morton 223 and on Teams.
Ando is Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and Professor of Mathematics at Ohio University.
This lecture is held simultaneously in Morton 223 and on Teams. Attend in person if you are able. Preceded by refreshments at 3:30 in Morton 325.
Abstract: The Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model is a quantum field theory for closed strings moving in a compact Lie group. The action for the WZW model includes a term due to Witten that turns out to be part of a topological field theory, analogous to the ones arise from parallel transport. This point of view illuminates some simple questions that are related to the geometry of elliptic cohomology.
