The Physics & Astronomy Colloquium Series presents Jennifer Parsons from American Physical Society, discussing "Physics for the People: Charting an APS Roadmap for Civic Science and Public Engagement" on November 1.
Abstract: This talk will explore the American Physical Society's strategic approach to fulfill its mission: to empower members and partners to be impactful ambassadors for physics. The presenter will share insights from her experiences as a Rita Allen Foundation Civic Science Fellow working within the public engagement department at APS.
We will discuss how APS is promoting deeper connections between science and society through inclusive engagement and education, highlighting the JNIPER Community of Practice and the Science Trust Project.
The presenter invites participants to reflect on their own motivations for choosing to pursue physics and to consider the diverse reasons the public connects with science. Attendees can expect to leave with resources for planning community engagement initiatives and some ideas to advocate effectively for public engagement with physics.
