The Physics & Astronomy Colloquium Series presents Greg Harland of University of Notre Dame, discussing "Ultrafast Optical Spectroscopy and Publishing with the American Chemical Society" on April 14.

Abstract: The first half of this talk discusses recent work at the University of Notre Dame on the ultrafast spectroscopy of metal nanoparticles.  The topics that will be covered include the lifetime of the coherent motion of the electrons in the particles (plasmons), and how the particles interact mechanically with their environment.  

The second half of the talk gives a short history of the Journal of Physical Chemistry (the oldest functioning physical chemistry journal on the world), and some tips on how to survive in the modern publishing environment.
