Plant Biology Colloquium | How to Get a Job in Plant Biology, Sept. 17

The Environmental & Plant Biology Colloquium Series presents Dr. Glenn Matlack discussing "How to Get a Job in Plant Biology" on Sept. 17 from 11:50 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

This talk is aimed at both graduate and undergraduate students and will be in person (Porter 104) and streamed online via Teams.

Matlack is professor of Environmental & Plant Biology at Ohio University.

Abstract: Plant Biology is a comfortable home for us as students, but it is not a permanent position – sooner or later all students need to get jobs. How should you approach this task to find the right job, to find it quickly, and minimize anxiety along the way? In this colloquium, I break the process down into five steps: 1. Deciding what type of job you want, 2. Preparing a strong CV, 3. Finding a position to apply for, 4. Submitting your application, and 5. The Interview. A great deal depends on luck, but with a little preparation at each step you can substantially improve your chances. The most important takeaway: A little anxiety is good but desperation is bad. Be patient and be prepared.
