Promoting pride and inclusion, Ohio University's LGBT Center will be renamed the Pride Center effective March 20, 2024. This reception will commemorate the Center's 25+ year history and serve as a rededication to the Center's mission of education, connection, celebration, and support. Ohio University officially established its “GLBT Center” in 1998 prior to changing the name to “LGBT Center” in 1999. Constituents and visitors regularly question the LGBT Center’s name because it does not include a “Q” for “queer” or a “+” representing other queer identities (as in the acronym, “LGBTQ+”). Furthermore, the term LGBTQIAA+, which commonly stands for “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and aromantic,” is at times critiqued for highlighting some identities and not others. Recognizing the limitations of acronyms, Ohio University's Student Senate unanimously passed a bill supporting a change in name from “LGBT Center” to “Pride Center” in October 2023.
