DESCRIPTION:Ohio University faculty and staff are invited to join the Strat
 egic Ohio Council on Higher Education (SOCHE) for a virtual lunch and lear
 n entitled “The First 3 Weeks: College Students’ Initial Sense of Belo
 nging\,” on Thursday\, Oct. 12\, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session wi
 ll be presented by Dr. Jeff Montgomery\, Dean of Technical Studies at Sout
 hern State Community College.\n\n \n\nBelonging is a fundamental human mot
 ivation. Positive belonging in students can promote higher rates of retent
 ion and student success. Similarly\, lack of belonging predicts lower acad
 emic achievement and departure from the institution.\n\n \n\nInstitutions 
 can take practical steps to promote a sense of belonging in their students
 \, often with little or no cost to the college. Those colleges that take t
 hese steps can anticipate greater student satisfaction\, completion\, and 
 success.\n\n \n\nThis presentation will discuss what factors influence stu
 dents’ sense of belonging in community colleges\, why belonging is impor
 tant for keeping students on the path to success\, and why college practit
 ioners should be interested in nurturing that. Discussion will include fac
 tors that influence student belonging within the first three weeks of thei
 r community college experience\, as well as what role faculty and staff ca
 n play in fostering belonging.\n\n \n\nFrom this webinar\, attendees will
