Students invited to join American Civil Liberties Union Action Team at OHIO

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio University is beyond excited to begin in-person meetings on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. in Bentley 136.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has been defending the liberties granted to the citizens of the United States through the Constitution since 1920. The Ohio University ACLU Campus Action Team is dedicated to safeguarding these same liberties on, and off campus.

The ACLU has played a major role in landmark supreme court cases like Roe v. Wade, Dobbs v. Jackson, Brown v. Board of Education, and so many more. The ACLU has fought for our rights since they were founded. This includes but is not limited to, our right to abortion, same sex marriage, and LGBTQ+ rights.

At chapter meetings, the group focuses on creating a comfortable space for members to engage in difficult dialogue.

“I am so excited for others to experience the ACLU like I have,” notes ACLU Chapter Secretary, Taylor Scneider. “The ACLU has become a safe and brave space for me to learn about civil liberties on campus, and beyond.” The meetings center around civil liberties that will ultimately impact Ohio University students, and citizens residing in Appalachia.

The ACLU-OU has hosted a plethora of events these past two years. They have brought in speakers such as the Executive Director of the ACLU of Ohio, J. Bennett Guess and hosted a statewide Campus Action Team Conference at Ohio University. They also have planned many Listening Campaigns in conjunction with the ACLU of Ohio. All of these events are put together for the benefit of our members, to learn and connect  with those doing exceptional work in civil liberty advocacy.

Hannah Louck, Deputy Director of the ACLU chapter, shared her excitement, adding, “I can not wait to see where the ACLU Campus Action Team goes this academic year. Our executive board is passionate, enthusiastic, and ready to put in the work. This year we hope to not only educate students on important political issues, but to get our hands dirty in creating change on, and off campus.”

The ACLU-OU has no major or formal requirements to become a member. We encourage all who are interested in joining, or have any questions,  to reach out to our New Member Coordinator Aimee Adkins at aa357619@ohio.edu.
