"The World We Make Together: Rethinking Global Leadership",  with Richard Kraince, Director of the Global Leadership Center.

What kind of leadership do Ohio University students, faculty, and staff practice in an increasingly interdependent world challenged by uncertainty, conflict, and rapid change? “The World We Make Together: Rethinking Global Leadership” explores how engagement across languages, cultures, disciplines, and communities can prepare us not just to better understand the world, but to participate in shaping it. Drawing on current trends in international education and lessons learned through community engagement, the talk considers global leadership as a practice grounded in relationships, curiosity, collaboration with people from across the globe.

Richard Kraince, Ph.D. directs the Global Leadership Center in the School of International Studies & Languages and serves as the Global Engagement Coordinator for the Cutler Scholars Program in the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University. A scholar of higher education, he examines how social, religious, and environmental movements impact higher education and influence social change internationally. Prof. Kraince spent much of his career helping to reestablish one of North America’s great liberal arts institutions: Antioch College. As Dean of Cooperative, Experiential & International Education, he led the relaunch of Antioch’s historic Cooperative Education (Co-op) Program, where he served as an Associate Professor of Cooperative & International Education for fourteen years.

A three-time Fulbright recipient, Prof. Kraince recently conducted field research on ecological education and conservation culture under Fulbright’s ASEAN Research Program in Southeast Asia during the 2024-25 academic year. He completed residencies at Gadjah Mada University’s Faculty of Biology (Yogyakarta, Indonesia), the University of Malaya’s Sustainable Development Centre (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), and Ateneo de Manila’s Institute of Sustainability (Quezon City, Philippines) as a visiting Fulbright Fellow. He has previously held posts as Research Professor of Southeast Asian Societies and Academic Coordinator of the Center for Asian & African Studies at El Colegio de México in Mexico City, where he taught graduate level courses on contemporary movements, social research methods, and the political sociology of Islam in Southeast Asia for four years. He speaks Bahasa Indonesia at the “advanced mid” level, per ACTFL evaluation in fall 2023. He also has extensive experience with environmental education and community service programming in the Caribbean.
