About this Event
53 Richland Avenue, Athens, Ohio 45701
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552856297422As Ohio University celebrates its 50-year relationship with Chubu University, please join us for an opportunity to learn how Japan is confronting social problems such as "hikikomori" (social withdrawal) and addressing the needs of a growing aging population - as well as how YOU might be able to visit Japan to witness these issues first-hand.
The presenters will also share information about the Social Welfare International Exchange Program (formerly known as the Exchange Program for Developmentally Delayed and Elderly Citizens). In 2024, this program will commemorate 40 years of a Japan-Athens partnership that has facilitated over 100 visits throughout its history. The exchange program was developed by Dr. Tomoyasu and Sumiko Tanaka, who also cultivated the OHIO-Chubu relationship during Tomoyasu's tenure as a faculty member in Ohio University's Physics and Astronomy Department. OHIO's Tanaka Hall is named in their honor.
During spring break March 10-16, the Japan contingent of the exchange wishes to host Athens and Ohio University visitors to Japan. If you have interest in being notified as this opportunity develops, please follow the Facebook page below:

"To be 'international' we must forget the national boundaries that divide us, and live together as citizens of a global world. We must rid ourselves of stereotypes, feelings of superiority and/or inferiority, respect others, and live together as companions in a contemporary world. To do that, we must strive to expand our horizons."
-Dr. Tomoyasu Tanaka, 1985
