Presented by Tariq Tarey, Director of Refugee Social Services at Jewish Family Services Columbus

 

This lecture explores the realities of forced migration, life in refugee camps, and resettlement in the United States. It highlights the role of integration in building inclusive communities and the power of storytelling to amplify refugee voices. Attendees will gain insight into the challenges refugees face and how communities can support them.

 

Tariq Tarey is the Director of the Refugee and Integration Program at Jewish Family Services. Beyond his professional role, Tariq is a documentary photographer and filmmaker, dedicated to capturing powerful, authentic stories. His exhibitions, such as Forlorn in Ohio and Bhutanese-Nepali Neighbors, reveal a deep connection to his subjects, earning him recognition, including the Ohio Museums Association’s "Best of Show" award. His films, including Women, War, and Resettlement: Nasro’s Journey and Silsilad, have aired on PBS and been featured at renowned film festivals, celebrated for their honest portrayal of the human experience.

 

In addition to his creative work, Tariq serves on several boards and commissions. In 2023, the Franklin County Commissioners appointed him to the Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) Board of Trustees. He is also currently working on a book highlighting the stories of the Congolese refugee community.
