This event will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Game Research and Immersive Design (GRID) Lab. The GRID Lab will debut three new projects:

  • The newest season of cine-VR experiences for the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA). These cine-VR experiences train law enforcement to emphasize situational decision-making to decrease the use of force and to refine an officer’s “soft skills” (e.g., listening and de-escalation) techniques. The series also highlights a new project with the Forensic Nursing Network, illustrating the importance of inter-professional collaboration between law enforcement and healthcare providers. More than 100 people worked on these productions, including OHIO students, alums, faculty, and staff in collaboration with law enforcement and healthcare professionals (Viewer discretion is advised due to violence, mental health crises, adult language, and mature situations.)

  • Operation Big Missile - A virtual reality obstacle course combining game and VR development with themed entertainment effects. This satirical experience places the user in the role of a new mechanic at a US Air Force nuclear missile silo. There has been an accident in the silo, and you must do everything you can to prevent a missile launch. Players will be tasked with physically moving around the missile silo, solving problems, and doing all they can to delay a launch. (Participant discretion is advised due to satirical takes on military might, the fetishization of modern technology, and adult language). ***You must wear flat-heeled, closed-toe shoes to participate.***

  • Red House Detective VR - A new VR simulation trains new detectives to navigate evidence collection across multiple crime scenes. This project is being developed in partnership with OPOTA. (Participant discretion is advised due to suspected crimes of sexual assault and human trafficking.)
