About the film

Step back in time to 1971 and go inside one of the premiere festivals devoted to the exciting, culturally relevant, and traditional form of music known as Bluegrass. Carlton Haney — a booking agent, talent scout, festival promoter, bluegrass musician, and known widely as “The P.T. Barnum of Country Music” — was one of the first folks to take a stab at promoting the virtues of this age-old style of music from the hills and hollers, largely through the creation of one of the first multi-day festivals featuring bands and solo performers who had been perfecting the style for generations. And, this film offers viewers both a front row seat and a behind-the-scenes look as some of the best performers of the era take the stage.

Featuring bluegrass music’s pioneers, as well as those who would take the music into the future, Bluegrass: Country Soul contains unforgettable performances by the likes of Earl Scruggs, The Osborne Brothers, Ralph Stanley, Chubby Wise, Mac Wiseman, J.D. Crowe, and Jimmy Martin, The Country Gentlemen, Del McCoury, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Alan Munde, and more. Also of note is Tony Rice’s final show with The Bluegrass Alliance, and his first outing with J.D. Crowe & the Kentucky Mountain Boys. Most importantly, however, is the legacy this film has enshrined by preserving these legendary moments in color for generations to come.

About the speaker

Becks is a queer scholar and musician, focusing their work on community engagement and placemaking through music, organizing, and agriculture. As a musician, Becks works to create events that bridge the divisions in communities. Their scholarship focuses on queer Appalachian music and the importance that music traditions hold, both in Appalachian communities and the queer community.

About the film

Deep in the hollows of the Appalachian Mountains, the construction of a fracked gas pipeline rips through mountaintops, forests, and streams, bearing down on rural communities across Appalachia. Russell, an Army veteran who once swore an oath to protect and serve his country, now finds his home, waters, and forests under threat. He enlists in the battle to defend his community. Russell joins forces with people along the pipeline route, including Georgia, an apple farmer in Virginia; Maury, a retired schoolteacher in West Virginia; and Crystal and Jason, Indigenous community leaders in North Carolina. Together, they form a movement that faces numerous setbacks as they take on the multibillion-dollar corporations behind the pipeline. When one of the nation’s most powerful politicians intervenes, the stage is set for a high-stakes showdown.

About the film

This powerful, intimate, and multi-faceted documentary from filmmaker Laura Paglin delves into the day-to-day lives of the local residents of Piketon and Pike County, Ohio. As the story moves from person to person, an image emerges of a close-knit community struggling to keep its identity while factors like poverty, drug addiction, lack of opportunity, a constantly-shifting cultural landscape, the construction of a nuclear waste storage facility, and an unsolved murder all threaten to erase the values and quality of life that took generations to build. Though the future often looks bleak for Pike County, this film beautifully relates the struggle between the temptation to give up and the urge to hold on.

About the speaker

Laura Paglinis a documentary filmmaker whose more recent films have dealts pecifically with struggles of marginalized communities. No Umbrella–Election Day in the City, which brings us a street level view of election day chaos as it played out in one inner city poling location, premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and aired on HBO. Facing Forward: A Student’s Story, which follows a charismatic but troubled teenager at a strict new inner city charter school, aired nationally on PBS. Paglin’s Unseen tells the complex and horrific story of the Anthony Sowell serial murders that were discovered in Cleveland, Ohio in 2009. Distributed by Filmrise, Unseen has become one of the more popular documentaries on Amazon Prime, having made it to many “best of” lists.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: As a long-time Ohio resident, I hadn’t known about Pike County until a 2016 mass murder brought it into the national spotlight. Curious, I visited in 2017, expecting to explore the tragedy’s aftermath but found myself more drawn to the people, the landscape and stories unrelated to the crime. To gain deeper access into the lives of the these individuals, I lived at the budget motel featured in the film. Over time, a larger story of generational struggles emerged—from drug abuse to environmental degradation, to the murders themselves rooted in a child custody dispute. I realized a traditional narrative wouldn’t capture Pike County’s complexity, so I adopted a thematic approach, allowing each story to stand alone while contributing to the community’s portrait. This method let me juxtapose the community’s pain with its caring, joy, and resilience.

About the film

Sometimes funny, sometimes moving, this short 1983 Appalshop-produced documentary from filmmaker Herb E. Smith explores how the image of the “hillbilly” — and the negative stereotypes that come along with it — have unfairly taken root in the American psyche due to their proliferation in literature, film, news coverage, and other media of popular culture…in many cases as an underhanded way to ease the guilt of exploiting the rich resources and people of the Appalachian region of the United States.

About the speaker

Dr. Rachel Terman is Associate Professor of Sociology at Ohio University and an affiliate faculty member of the Appalachian Studies Program and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. She specializes in the sociology of Appalachia and the rural U.S.

Dr. Terman will introduce this classic Appalshop film from 1983 by talking about its contribution to the conversation about the hillbilly Appalachian identity and the value of Appalachian traditions and culture. Then, she will briefly discuss the film in the context of the subsequent four decades of social and cultural dynamics in Appalachia and remark on the ongoing relevance of Strangers and Kin to our lives in Appalachia today.

About the film

Filmed over a year’s time in the region around Bent Mountain, VA, the filmmakers join a band of Appalachian local women in their underfunded, outmatched, and long-term battle against a corporation whose greed and corruption will seemingly stop at nothing to build a natural gas pipeline through the beautiful landscape of the Virginia mountains and put at risk the environment and livelihoods of tens of thousands of residents throughout Virginia and West Virginia.

Directed by award-winning screenwriter and director James Mottern — a Virginian himself — A Beast Touch The Mountain is a film with both a widespread message and a deeply personal one.

About the film

Academy Award-winner Joaquin Phoenix dons the mantle of one of music’s most revered performers in the life-spanning drama about the one-and-only Johnny Cash. Delving into the major touchstones of Cash’s life, this film from James Mangold (Cop Land, A Complete Unknown) shows Cash’s evolution as a young boy of humble beginnings with a harsh father, to his early successes as a recording artist, to his fateful encounter with June Carter – the love of his life – and, ultimately to his rise to becoming one of the biggest superstars and pop culture icons in the history of music. Even with this major success, though, Johnny Cash has always found a way to keep his humanity, his spirituality, his love, and his talent from making him stray too far from walking the line, instead making music that makes sense to sensible people.

About the speaker

Adam Remnant is a songwriter/musician, photographer, and educator living in Athens, Ohio. Remnant got his start in music fronting the folk-rock band Southeast Engine. As the principal singer and songwriter of the band, Remnant and his bandmates garnered critical acclaim releasing five albums and touring across the United States and Canada. In 2013, Remnant began plotting his way forward as a solo artist. He assembled a little studio in his basement and earnestly began writing & recording the songs that comprise the 2016 EP, When I Was a Boy, as well as the 2018 LP, Sourwood. 2024 saw the release of the Sunrise at the Sunset Motel EP and the full length, BIG DOORS. The new recordings are performed by Adam Remnant and his working band, the Signs. Additionally, Adam is a passionate photographer and works as an arts education administrator at Stuart’s Opera House in Southeast Ohio.
